The name of William Jeggles first wife is often said to be Mary, based on the totally undocumented work of Raymon Meyers Tingley.[3] Tingley's work is frequently cited, although it is increasingly becoming considered unreliable unless supported by documentation from other sources. At present, the only known documented wife of William Jeggles is Elizabeth, often considered his second wife, again following Tingley. There is, however, no reason to believe that she is not his first wife, and no evidence of a marriage in Salem to support the claim that William married a wife there. There was a Mary Jeggles who was most likely a member of William's family, but she could as easily be his daughter or his mother as his wife; there is not enough information to determine the relationship. (See discussions on William's page, and on Mary's page.) Similarly, there are serious problems and questions concerning the children listed in Tingley, at least some of whom appear to have resulted from, or been augmented by, creative speculation. In particular, the claim that Bridget Unknown, wife of John Rowe, was a daughter of William Jeggles ignores the differences in their places of origins and the times of their respective arrival in New England beyond credibility.
