[edit] NotesThe Cowen ancestry has been traced by other investigators and reaches to the north of Ireland. From there two brothers, Edward and William Cowen, emigrated to America, and after a long and stormy passage, reached Philadelphia, Pa., in 1785. Before starting out to secure a pioneer farm, Edward Cowen was married in January, 1786, at Philadelphia, to Elizabeth Pote a native of Germany, who had been a fellow passenger. A Michael Pote is known to have settled before the Revolution in Woodbury Township, Bedford County. It seems like that Elizabeth Pote is related to him. This According to notes at: Revolutionary War Michael Poke Document Michael POTE Sr. was born 1749 in Germany and immigrated 18 Sep 1773 in Philadelphia, PA, From Rotterdam, On The Ship "Brittania". He died 2 Feb 1818 in Woodberry Twp., Bedford Co, PA. He Lived in about 1783 in Woodberry Twp., Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. He had a farm of 200 acres, 2 horses, 2 cows, according to 1788 Woodberry Twp. tax records. Roaring Springs where Edward Cowan lived, is within a few miles of Woodberry Twp where Michael Pote lived. It seems likely that Edwards wife, Elizabeth Pote, is related to Michael, and possibly his daughter. If Edward came to America c1785, it seems unlikely that he met his wife on-board ship. Rather, it seems likely that she was already in America. |
