Contained Places Camden was originally established in 1769 as a district in the British colony of South Carolina from land in the former Craven County. It existed for 31 years before being abolished in 1800. [edit] Timeline1769 - Camden District is established as one of seven judicial districts (circuit court districts) in South Carolina when the four original counties are abolished. 1785 - Camden District establishes seven counties within its boundaries, but the counties are subsets of and still subordinate to Camden District: 1788 - Camden District becomes located in the state of South Carolina, United States. 1791 - Camden District loses land to Pinckney District. 1792 - Camden District establishes Salem County with land taken from Claremont and Clarendon Counties. 1800 - Camden District is abolished. The counties formerly within Camden District become known as "districts" and not "counties". Although they would later become known as counties again after 1868.
