Historical Facts

per familysearch.org:

Pinckney District was created in 1791 by South Carolina from parts of Ninety-Six District and Camden District on previously Cherokee land. Four subordinate counties were created within it:

  • Chester County created 1785
  • Union County created 1785
  • York County created 1785
  • Spartanburg County created 1791 (this was the former Spartan County)

In 1800 South Carolina abolished all her overarching districts including Pinckney District. However, the remaining counties were often called districts as late as 1868.
