Thomas Gilbert Yearling was born on 19th August 1876 at Waterville, a small village on the coast in the parish of Dromod in County Kerry, Ireland. He was the son of Eliza Yearling, formerly Lawrence, and her husband John Yearling, a bricklayer. Both Thomas's parents had been born in England at Plymouth; they had married there and had their first couple of children there before moving to Ireland for a few years in the 1870s. Thomas appears to have been one of three children born whilst they were living in Ireland. They returned to Plymouth by 1880, when Thomas's younger sister was born. Thomas appears in the 1881 census living with his parents and siblings in Plymouth. In the late 1880s they moved to the neighbouring town of East Stonehosue, where they appear in the 1891 census, at which time Thomas was working as an errand boy.
In 1895, aged eighteen, Thomas married Annie May in Plymouth. They had eleven children together between 1895 and 1915, although four died young. In the 1901 census Thomas was working as a plasterer. In 1904 Thomas joined the Royal Navy, signing up for a twelve year period of service. In the event he was discharged after three years due to kidney troubles. After that, for a couple of years between 1908 and 1910, Thomas worked as a crew member on ships belonging to the Great Western Railway. By 1911 he was working as a riveter.
In the early 1920s Thomas's children started to marry; he became a grandfather in 1922.
Thomas died in 1929 in the Totnes area of Devon. He was 53 years old. Annie survived him by about 24 years.
