George Henry Yearling was born on 23rd July 1899 at Plymouth in Devon, son of Annie Yearling, formerly May, and her husband Thomas Gilbert Yearling, a riveter and plasterer. George appears in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Plymouth.
George served in the Royal Navy from a couple of days after his eighteenth birthday until shortly after the end of the First World War. He was described as being 5'3.25" tall with light brown hair and blue eyes. When he joined the Navy he had been working as a coal porter. After the war he continued to work as a sailor in the Merchant Navy through the 1920s.
In 1921 George married Emily Mabel Dingle. They went on to have a large family of thirteen children over the next 22 years.
George died on 29th July 1962, just a few days after his 63rd birthday, at the Freedom Fields Hospital in Plymouth. His estate was administered by his widow Emily.
