Skaneateles Press Observer, 20 Jan 1982: SUPPORTS GROUP HOMES [letter to the editor] To the Editor: We would like to express our support for the establishment of a group home for mentally retarded adults in the Town of Marcellus. We do so because of the considerable personal experiences we have had concerning this subject. We have a mentally retarded brother who is now 31 years old. In 1973, when his father died, he was sent from his home to live at the Syracuse Developmental Center. He lived in the center for three years, and then moved into a group home, where he now resides… Our brother is happy and we know that when his mother is no longer with us he will still remain well-cared for and healthy. He has learned how to be independent enough to take a city bus to Monarch Industries, where he works… We think that the residents of Marcellus could learn a great deal by living and working with these very special people. We have investigated the situation and are convinced that if proper supervision is provided, such a home could be clean, well-organized and offer no danger to the residents of Marcellus… Mentally retarded people are, after all, just as much human beings as we are, and we believe they deserve to live with the same kind of dignity we do. / [signed] Mr. & Mrs. James Durgee
