[partial clipping, Mar? 1989] JIM DURGEE NOURISHED ALL (continued from page 1) ...He took to the works of Dr. Bernie S. Siegel, a surgeon regarded by some in the medical community as a traitor to the trade. Siegel has achieved considerable fame... by arguing that a patient's attitude is as important to fighting disease as the skill of the physician. Jim went down to a Siegel seminar in Connecticut... and came home convinced that if positive thinking was not a cure-all it sure helped in the desperate hours. And more of the hours were becoming desperate. Jim appeared less frequently at Gerda Bothe's weekly support group meetings... Then word came that he was hospitalized... And then he went home for good. He had fought the good fight, but the relentless pressure of his affliction wore him down, and even the valiant must sleep. At the memorial service lines of his friends formed outside the church in the softly falling snow, patiently waiting to sign the guest register in the vestibule... Jim probably would have been embarrassed by all the fuss, but he would have liked the upbeat tone of the proceedings... (clipping in Pink Footlocker files)
