In earlier years in Norway there was no concept of a "last name" as we know it, but the farm name was/is sometimes used in a manner similar to a modern last name. But the farm that a person resided on could easily change resulting in a difficulty for modern people as to what name to use for their ancestors. In addition the spelling of farm names (and also other names) in Norway has not been consistant over the years. So we know that Syvert last lived on the Marvig farm in the Jelsa parish of Norway, but we also know that his parents and probably also Syvert, lived on at least one and likely more farms prior to Marvig. In various records, many Norwegian (maps, atlases, bygdeboker, etc) the farm has been recorded as Marvig, Marvik, Marvick, and Marwick. For convenience we generally use the Marvick spelling that most of the family used in the United States. My listing of Syvert's birthplace as Marvik is likely to be correct, but I have not yet found proof of when the family moved to Marvik or where they moved from. I have examined some of the parish records from Rodne that one source lists as a previous location without finding them mentioned. He lived at Marvig, Norway (a small farm on the Sandsfjorden) until April 1854 (April 25 according to the parish exit lists) when he sailed from Stavanger for 6 weeks (13 weeks in some sources) to Quebec, Canada landing in June 1854 and then continuing on to Ottawa, Illinois. It is believed that he traveled first to Hull, England then to Liverpool, England by train and then to Quebec. He travelled on the same boat as his fiance Laurense who lived in the same parish in Norway. They started married life on a farm in Mission Creek, Illinois where they lived until 1859. In 1859 they purchased 80 acres in Nettle Creek, Illinois later bought an additional quarter section. By 1881 he owned and farmed 400 acres (probably in 80 acre pieces) which were accross the road from the homestead and that he bought for $18,200. They moved to Morris, Illinois in 1890, and moved to Story City, Iowa (where fouy of their children lived) on September 1, 1904. In Story City they built a home at 832 Grand Avenue. and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in their new home with all their children and nearly all their grandchildren present. Ten years later they celebrated their 60th anniversary with most of the sixty members of the Marvick family present. Syvert Marvick was a good manager, industrious, conscientious and gave generously of his means to the upbuilding of god's kingdom and to the assistance of his fellow men. He died at his home June 20, 1916, survived by his wife, eight children, thirty five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. His favorite expression when parting with his dear ones was "Ta Gud med dig" - "Take God with you" or "God be with you". He was a mail carrier while in Nettle Creek in addition to being a farmer. Twice a week he would go to Morris and pickup the mail for Nettle Creek. References
