He was born near Morris, Illinois (10 miles away). With his father, and brothers Sam and Joseph he formed the Iowa and Dakota Land and Loan Company in Sisseton, South Dakota with offices above the Citizens National Bank, which they were part owners of, on the west side of main street next to Maldaner's drug store (now Pearson's). Other business partners were A. H. Ingersoll, J. W. Barrington, and Henry Helvig. Other businesses included a Studebaker dealership in Sisseton. He served on the church council, school board, city council, state senate (where he was the chairman of the appropriations committee), and as first South Dakota State Highway Commissioner. He lived in Nettle Creek, Illinois until March 1902, then moved to Sisseton, South Dakota. He was a South Dakota state Senator for 6 years. While he was highway commissioner he attended a conference in Chicago where he suggested the use of odd numbers for north-south highways and even numbers for east-west highways. He died while trying to close the door (right side) on his Model A Ford that opened while turning a corner, the car rolled over. He attended Morris Normal and Scientific School 1890-91. He was engaged in farming in Nettle Creek 1891-1901. Moved to Sisseton, S.D. March, 1902. He was a member of the City Council, Sisseton for four years and of the School Board ten years. He was State Senator, South Dakota, three terms, 1913, 1915, and 1917, State Highway Commissioner 1919-25, State Motor Division 1929 and 1930, National Bank Receiver 1932-36, and a Real Estate agent. His confirmation certificate is at Lydia Swanberg's (in 1990) and shows he was confirmed on 31 Oct 1886 at Lisbon Norwegian Lutheran Church by P. A. Rasmussen. The certificate is in Norwegian. His wedding certificate is at Lydia Swanberg's (1990) and states the following: Andrew Marvick of Grundy co., Illinois and Linnie Bjelland of De Kalb County, Illinois were united in marriage according to the ordinance of God and the Laws of the state of Illinois at the brides home on the twentieth (20) day of February in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety five.
