Information on Susannah Karnes

Bedford County Marriage bonds has: Jul. 25, 1797; Josiah Wood & Susanna K arns, daughter of Michael; John Dooley, Surety; Married by Isham Fuqua, J uly 26, 1797.

F. Landis Weaver writes:

Susanna Karnes was born about 1779 in Bedford County, Virginia. She app eared on the census in 1810 in Franklin County, Virginia. (living with 1 d aughter over 10 years old. She died after 1830 in an unknown place. She i s shown on 1820 & 1830 Census in Franklin County, Virginia.).

Susanna Karnes married Josiah Wood (son of Thomas Wood Jr.) on 25 Jul 1 797. John Dooley posted surety, and Michael Karnes Sr. gave his Consent . This indicates that Susanna was under the age of 18, and was born aft er 25 Jul 1779. John Dooley was the father-in-law of Josiah Wood's brot her Jeremiah, and his sister Sede.

Josiah Wood apparently inherited some land from his father's estate, wh ich was located near the northeastern part of the current Bedford Count y Country Club Golf Course. But he sold that land and moved to neighbor ing Franklin County, Virginia. Josiah and Susanna only had one living d aughter (Elizabeth), who grew up and married William McClanahan in Bedf ord County on 18 Oct 1816. Census records could be traced through 1830, b ut Josiah & Susanna's whereabouts are unknown, after that time.
