Information on Elizabeth Karnes

Bedford County Marriage bonds has: Feb. 25, 1793; Joseph Clark & Elizab eth Karn; Abraham Karn, Surety; Married by Jeremiah Hatcher, Feb. 28, 1 793. _______________________ F. Landis Weaver writes:

Elizabeth Karnes was born about 1774 in Bedford County, Virginia. She died before 1849 in (probably) Bedford County, Virginia. (She is not in her husband's will of 1849, in Bedford Will Book 13 page 493). She was probably buried in Bedford County Virginia.

Elizabeth Karnes married Joseph Clark on 25 Feb 1793. Her brother Abraham posted the surety, and there was no mention of Consent being required. Therefore, she was probably over 18 years of age, and was born before 25 Feb 1775.

Elizabeth evidently stayed in Bedford County She was not mentioned in her husband's will of 1849 (Book 13-pg-493), and she was probably deceaed at that time. She appeared to be alive on the 1820 Census, but a much younger woman was listed on the 1830 Census. Joseph Clark named their children in his will as: Isham, Mary, Elizabeth (DeWitt), and Susan. _______________________

By Linda Jonas: Elizabeth Karnes is listed with Joseph Clark in the 1810 and 1820 censuses of Bedford County, Virginia. Joseph Clark married (2) Susannah Lockett on 15 Jun 1824 Bedford County. Susannah is the wife listed with Joseph in the 1830 census. In 1850 Joseph Clark, age 80, is listed with two of his daughters Mary and Susan. Next door is his son Isham Clark. Joseph wrote his will in 1849 naming his four children, and in November 1850 added a note that his daughter Elizabeth [wife of William H Dewitt] was now deceased leaving a son Joseph C. Dewitt. All four of the children named in Joseph Clark's will were the children of his second wife Susannah.
