Information on George Karnes

F. Landis Weaver writes:

George KARNES (unproven son) was born about 1763 in Probably Bedford County, Virginia. He died about 1835 in Low Moor, Allegheny County, Virginia. He was buried in Karnes Cemetery, Low Moor, VA. (with twin brother Jacob Karnes).

GEORGE KARNES has been positively proven to be a son of "Michael Karns of Bedford Co." by a Botetourt Co. Deed (Book 8, pg.412), dated 11 May 1804. That Deed was for 120 acres of land at Low Moor, VA., if George agreed to relinquish all further claims against his father's Estate. George was buried in the Karnes Cemetery, located on a hill in the western portion of the land of his twin brother, Jacob.

HOWEVER, since there were two different elderly men named "Michael Karns" who lived in Bedford Co. at about that time, it is very difficult to absolutely prove which man was his father. There was no "wife signature" on the above mentioned Deed. One "Michael Karns" was married to "Elizabeth", and the other one was married to "Catherine". Extensive land record research has shown that the Michael Karns who married Elizabeth, had purchased part of that Low Moor land in 1777. Several other records have also been found, which indicate that "Michael & Elizabeth" were George's parents. But not one of those records provides absolute proof. So until better records can be found, George's parents remain UNPROVEN.

George married Elizabeth Persinger (daughter of Christopher Persinger) on 26 Apr 1794. The marriage ceremony was performed by Christopher Clark, who became a lawyer, moved to Bedford Co., and helped handle the Estate of the "Michael Karnes" whose wife was Elizabeth. Christopher Persinger lived just south of Covington, VA on Blue Spring run in 1794. George Karnes was named as one of the heirs of Christopher Persinger (because he was married to Elizabeth Persinger) in Botetourt Co. Deed Book 14- p.96, dated 12 Oct 1815. Christopher Persinger's father was Jacob Persinger, who had lived near Matthew Shaup/Michael Karnes in the 1740-50's at McGaheysville, VA. Jacob Persinger bought the land that John & Adam Sharp (step-brothers of Michael Karnes, and then living near him in Bedford Co.) inherited from their father on 25 Dec 1764 (Augusta Deed Book 11-pg.791). All of these "family ties" between Christopher Clark, the Persinger's and the Sharp's are somewhat confusing, but they do provides some more "circumstantial" evidence that George Karnes's parents were probably Michael & Elizabeth Karnes of Bedford Co.

George & Elizabeth are believed to have had a few children, but they are too poorly documented to list. The 1810 Census shows a male, age under 10; a male age 10-16; a male over 45; a female age under 10; a female age 26-45. The 1820 Census shows two males age 16-26; a male age over 45; a female age 26-45. The 1830 Census shows a male age 15-20; a male age 20-30; a male age 30-40; a male age 60-70; a female age 10-15, a female age 15-20; and a female age 50-60. As usual, it is not clear whether the young people living with George & Elizabeth were their children or b oarders.

George & Elizabeth (Persinger) Karnes were buried beside his twin brother, Jacob.
