Information on Barbara Karnes

F. Landis Weaver writes:

Barbara Karnes was in Bedford County, Virginia. She was living in 1828 in Bedford County, Virginia. (She had 10 kids & her husband died by 1828). She died in Feb 1839 in Bedford County, Virginia (Will Book 10, page 80). She was buried in NW Bedford County, Virginia. (Probably; she lived just SW of Peaksville).

Barbara Karnes was probably born about 1771. She was under the age of 18 when she was married on 22 Jan 1787. Her mother Elizabeth signed a note of Consent for the Marriage bond. Barbara married George Karnes Jr., the son of her father's deceased brother and Barbara's first cousin.

George Jr. & Barbara remained in Bedford County, Virginia all of their lives. Most of the Karnes descendants who still live in the area are descended from them. George Jr. owned nearly 2000 acres of land in Bedford County when he died in late 1827. His land was allotted to his children in 1828, with Barbara retaining her dower portion, just to the west of Peaksville. Barbara died in Bedford County in Feb/Mar 1839 (Will Book 10 , page 80). George Jr. & Barbara's burial location is unknown.

George Jr. & Barbara's children were named in the Allotment of George Jr's Estate, in 1828. They were: Jacob-1787, Susannah Houck-1790, Michael-1791, Elizabeth Watson, John, Sarah Wills, Lydia Wills, Mary Shewster, Docia Arrington, and Reuben. Most of the boys remained in Bedford County, but several of the girls married and moved away.

[By Linda Jonas] The estate settlement of George Kerns lists all of the children mentioned by Landis Weaver except for Reuben. Reuben is listed as one of the neighboring property owners, but he is not one of sons of George. The last child mentioned in the estate settlement is "Heirs of Jacob Kerns."
