It is Sarah's letter that gives us so much information on her grandparents, John A. and Catharine (Comer) Rittgers, as well as much Iowa information - especially of her father, Jacob . (#1.2) We first see her on the 1850 census, age 10, with parents in Marion Twp.[p 855 fa m #213/219] On the 1856 Iowa State Census, Sarah is age 11,and in her father's home in Polk Co., Ia. [p. 274, fam #26] We are told in the Family Record that Sarah was thrown out of the house by step mother, Catherine, at age 15. "Her older brother, Eli, left with her." She worked in a bakery in Des Moines prior to her marriage to Samuel M. GOOD. He was born about 1824 in Ohio. In 1860 we see her in Des Moines, Polk Co., Ia., with her husband, Samuel M. Good, "Pedler. " [p 8, fam #66/59] Newspapers of the late 1800's and early 1900's carry small ads for various supplies available from the store of "S.M.Good, Des Moines." [Newspapers microfilmed and on file in Iowa Hist. Soc., Des Moines.] In her father's estate, 1880, she is listed as "wife of S.M. Good residing in Des Moines, Ia." They later moved to San Diego, where they lived the remainder of their lives. No issue. We are told they had one child who died in infancy.
