On the 1850 census, age 8, b. Oh., with parents in Marion Twp., Hocking Co., Oh.[p 855 fam #213/219] In 1856, the Ia. State Census shows Peter, age 13, with his father in Polk Co. [p. 274, fam #26] On 1860 census, age 18, with father and stepmother, Jefferson Twp., Polk Co., Ia. Farm Laborer. [p. 95 fam #765/700] Peter never married. He moved to Kansas and farmed most of his life. We are told he "enlisted in the Civil War at the beginning and served four years." We find an enlistment date of 12 May 1864, age 22, Polk Co., Ia., on "Full Context of American Civil War Soldiers" Ancestry.com data base. Here it reports he served in "H" Co., 44th Inf Reg., Ia., and mustered out Davenport, Ia, on 15 Sept 1864. He may have served earlier, also, as the soldiers would muster out and re-enlist. During the War, William Nosler (who later married Peter's sister Esther) was one of his "buddies". "He saw service in Tennessee and along the Red River of the South. Was never wounded." In 1870, at age 26, he was in Walnut Grove, Saline Co., Ks., working on the farm of his brother, Perry, (#12.9)[p 50 fam #144/141] In father's estate in 1880, he was listed as being of "Silada, Ks." On 1900 census, "P.M." Rittgers is found as a boarder with one J.S. Cummins in Gypsum, McPherson Co., Ks. His age is given as "53 - b. Feb 1847." The 1910 census shows Peter, 65, in Gypsum Creek Twp, McPherson Co., Ks. With him is nephew Jacob (#129.B), age 20, son of Perry, and Jacob's wife, Nina, age 21. They have been married "0" years. Peter states he owns the farm free and clear. Jacob is a farm laborer , "working out".[p. 3B, ED 54, Fam #53/53] Peter is found yet again on the 1920 census, age 77, where he is with his nephew, Sanford Rittgers (#121.9) in Gypsum Creek Twp., Roxbury, McPherson Co., Ks. [ED 67, p 6A, fam 76/76]
