In the 1850 census we find John A., age 21, b. Oh., with parents in Marion Twp., Hocking Co., Oh.[p 855 fam #213/219] We do not see him in his father's home, nor do we see him with other family, on the 1856 Iowa State Census, Polk Co., Ia. [p. 274, fam #26] Family Record states he never married. It also states that "with his brother, Israel (#12.5) he crossed the plains to California in 1850." The 1870 census gives us John, 38, in Lone Pine, Inyo Co., Calif. living with his brother, Israel. They declare they each have $1000 in real estate and $150 in personal estate. They are farming. [p 331 fam #27/26] In 1880 we see John, now 51, living with brother Israel and Israel's wife Amelia in Lone Pine, Ca. He "works on farm". [ED 4, p 503 fam #150/198] On his father's estate, he is listed as living in "Five Point, (Fresno Co.) Calif." in Mar, 1880. Family stories tell us he "was a farmer and rancher through out life."
