On the 1850 census, age, 13, with parents Marion Twp., Hocking Co., Oh.[p 855 fam #213/219] On the 1856 Iowa State Census, Eli is 18 and in his father's home in Polk Co., Ia. [p. 274, fam #26] In an index to the Kansas State census, 1859, we find Eli Rittgers in Grove Twp., Morris Co, Ks. (p. 8) He married Virginia Weis MYERS 1880 in Salina, Ks. In a letter written by Dorothy R.(?) we get the descendancy, marriage, and death date. Extracted from "Hist . of State of Kansas", A.T. Andreas, Vol. 1, p. 705: (retyped transcript submitted, no author cited.): "E.D. Rittgers, miller, firm C.R. Underwood & Co., etc. Mr. Rittgers came to Morris Co., Kansas, in 1858, where he engaged in farming for four years, then followed teaming from Leavenworth west for two years, then carried on the saw mill business for two years in Morris Co., Kansas. In 1866 he moved to Salina, erected a saw mill and ran the same for four years, then with C.R. Underwood, erected a steam grist mill, three stories; capacity, 100 barrels per day. He ran this for three years, then in company with C.R. Underwood & Co., erected the Western Star Mills; three high; capacity 200 barrels, which he has run ever since. E.D . Rittgers was born in Hocking Co., Ohio, August 22, 1836. Moved to Polk Co., Ia, in 1853, where he obtained a common school education, and farmed till he came to Kansas. He was married in Salina, Kansas, in 1880, to Miss Jennie Myers, a native of Iowa. He is a member of I.O.O.F." Following this, the unnamed transcriptionist stated that "Information was probably written by Eli so I figure dates, places and names pretty accurate. Probably written between 1880-1890 since daughter not mentioned." In father's estate, 1880, he is listed as being of "Silada, Ks." The 1900 census shows Eli in Smokey Hill Twp., Saline Co., Kansas. He declares he is 63, b. Aug 1836 in Oh. He is a widower, farming. With him is Etta G., niece, b. June 1873 in Kansas, age 26. She is probably in the home to care for Eli's daughter, Edith H. , b. Aug 1891, age 8. Even though the birth dates don't quite coincide, this is probably daughter of Perry, #129.5.[fam #256/256] Eli died 14 Oct 1909 in Salina, Saline, Ks.
