Information on Samuel Gilliland
- This land where the Gillilands' lived was very mountainous land. However, there were valleys along the rivers and creeks and they farmed all this land and some on the mountain sides. Some Of the valleys lying along the rivers-the Greenbriar River ran through this part Of the country- was one to three miles wide in places. Most all the homes were log cabins, some one room cabines but many made with a "dog trot" between two cabins. Most all had sleeping lofts in them and, Of course, all had fireplaces for heat and cooking. Some were rude cabins, some much nicer, Some might have a "lean-to" for a kitchen. They were built of different sizes, Of course. With Samuel Gilliland and Elizabeth having nine (9) children born to them they probably had a large cabin. - Between Jan., 1803 and NOV. 1804 the second child Of Samuel, Jane, and her husband, along with their first 6 children, moved to Gallia Co. Ohio. This was the Bell and Jane (Gilliland) Woten family. Then about 1807 Samuel & Elizabeth - with some of tneir family moved to Pickaway Co. Ohio. Samuel Jr went along but in 1813 he married and returned to Jackson Co. where his sister, Susannah and husband, John Burnside, and Sam's brother Hugh lived. Nathan, Andrew, Elizabeth and husband, Alexander Burnside, Nancy and husband David Kelley and Jonn all went to Logan or Pickaway county. All stayed around there except the youngest son, John and wife. They removed to Champaign Co. Ill. in 1835. The land in Gallia, Jackson and Scioto counties was again hilly and somewhat mountainous. The land around Logan and Pickaway was a little better, But when The Wotens' moved to Jay county Indiana they found fair farming land. Other descendants Of the Gilliland-Burnside families moved to other states, some to Iowa, some to Illinois, or Missouri or even Nebraska and farther west. Most of these states were filled with prarie lands.
- In moving from one part of the country to another in the early days most of the settlers had to use oxen-to pull their carts or wagons. They did not own horses in most cases, Although there where some "roads" that-led to "taverns" or Inns while traveling from some place like Virginia to Ohio there were many places traveling "across" the country had to be done without roads. Much of this was by way of mountain passes. The main crossing of the Ohio river from the east or Virginia, way and even from parts of Pennsylvania was by way of Marietta in what is now Washington County, Ohio. However, those Gilliland-Burnsides' coming into Gallia and Jackson counties, Ohio may have crossed at Gallipolis, which is the county seat of Gallia Co.,now. It is not known Just what route they took. But it is; known from the "History of Pickaway Co.Ohio" that Samuel's Youngest son, John came with a group led by a man named William Hill into what is now Pickaway Co. and picked out land for his parents and family as early as 1807-08. Some of the children were still unmarried at this time. Samuel, John, Andrew, (possibly), and Hugh were not married as yet, as proven by their marriages in Ohio or by county Histories. The others, except for Nathan, had married in Bath Co. Va., also, Hugh, who married in Mason Co. W. Va.
