Information on Samuel Gilliland

Samuel Gilliland, eighth child of Samuel, and his wife, Elizabeth Gilliland, was born ca 1786/7 in Creenbrier County, Va. and died 25 January, 1852 in Hamilton twsp., Jackson Co., Ohio. He had come to Ohio to Pickaway County, with his parents about 1806/07 and there married Sarah Krouskop 9 Jan., 1813 in Pickaway Co. She was born 18 March, 1796 in Philadelphia, the daughter of George and Mary (Jones)Krouskop. She died 29 Dec., 1848 and Samuel md: (2) Sarah (Johnson) Gilliland before the 1850 census. She was the widow of John Gilliland, relationship not established, if any. John Gilliland was one of the very early settlers of Jackson Co. and was a Justice of the Peace. Samuel & the first Sarah, with their small son, George, arrived in Jackson Co. in late 1815. He entered on land 2 Nov., 1815 and this same farm was in the family until the 1970's. Both Samuel and Sarah Gilliland are buried in Stephenson cemetery, Jackson Co. Oh. hey were farmers all of their lives on the same land, very well respected and known throughout the township and county.
When Samuel and Sarah settled in this county it was one great "forest" in which the wild game that was peculiar to this area abounded. The animals included bear, wolves, panthers, wild cats, deer, etc. Sometimes the deer would come up close and eat low hanging limbs from trees, which was usual in all the wooded lands. The house Samuel built, of course, was a log cabin, possibly at first a one room cabin, maybe with a loft. He built on to it after his family started growing, but in later years the descendants built a house. At the time Samuel came there were no churches nor schools. The nearest markets were at Portsmouth and Chillicothe, many miles away and mostly from their place on Just trails for a long distance. Most things were made in the home - clothing, furniture etc. Samuel and Sarah (Krouskop) Gilliland had eight (8) children and many descendants, many of whom are still living in that part of Ohio or in nearby W. Virginia. Like others, many have moved to other states farther west etc.
