Robert Cundall was born in 1768 in Swetton, Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, North Yorkshire. He was the firstborn son of Robert Cundall and Margaret Hardcastle and was named after his father accordingly. He was christened on Monday 4 July 1768.

Robert married Mary Kipling on Thursday 30 July 1795 in Kirkby Malzeard. The witnesses at the marriage were William Burrill and John Burrill. They had three daughters together, Susannah, Mary and Jane.

Robert was a Churchwarden between 1799 and 1800.

Mary died in 1827, leaving Robert a widower. Robert died when he was 76 years old, on Sunday 7 July 1844 in Dallowgill, Kirkby Malzeard. He was buried Beside his wife on Thursday 11 July 1844 in St Andrews Church, Plot 9 in the Churchyard. His gravestone has the following inscription:

Mary, wife of Robert Cundall of Swetton died 13 November 1827 in her 50th year Robert, died 7 July 1844 age 76
