John Cundall, a Husbandman, was born in 1776 in Swetton, Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, North Yorkshire. The youngest son of Robert Cundall and Margaret, he was christened on Tuesday 13 August 1776.

John married Rebecca Fryer on Monday 29 April 1799 in Kirkby Malzeard. The witnesses at the marriage were Robert Fryer and John's younger sister Margaret Cundall.

He had seven children with Rebecca, two daughters and five sons, the first of which was named after his father Robert, and the second after himself.

John died at the age of 56 in 1832 in Dallowgill, Kirkby Malzeard, leaving Rebecca a widow. He was buried on Tuesday 7 August 1832 in St Andrews Church cemetery.
