Richard Elwell (d. 2nd qtr 1860, Brentford, Middlesex, bmd) married Catherine Odell (d. 4th qtr 1868 Kensington, bmd) 22jun1797 at Westminster (IGI). Richard was b. 24mar1775, chr 31mar1775 at Westminster, son of John and Mary Elwell (familysearch record search, Vital Records). Richard was son of John Elwell (25jan1738-21feb1784) and Mary While (information, D. Elfick), who married 14jan1762 at Walsall, Staffs (IGI). John Elwell was b. abt 9feb1738 at Walsall, son of William Elwell and Margaret (IGI, however the date is suspect as the previous son was b. 6 months earlier). William Elwell (8jan1709-5jul1790) and Margaret Lathom (information, D. Elfick), Black Country ironmaster, had 3 sons, William (1736-1793, Mayor of Walsall), Edward (1737-1809) and John (1739-1784). The book “The Iron Elwells” deals mainly with William (1736). Jonathan Elwell (1dec1811 Hammersmith-4feb1898 Weston-s-M) was son of Richard Elwell (24mar1775 Hammersmith-13apr1860) and Catherine Odell (1774-1858) (R. Elfick). Catherine Odell, wife of Rd. Elwell and only daughter of late George Thomas Odell, formerly of Odell, Bedfordshire, d. aged 84 at Hammersmith (Gentleman’s Magazine, jan1859). In 1841 Richard and Catherine Elwell (both b. 1776 Middlesex) were at Hammersmith; in 1851 Catherine Elwell (1774 Marylebone, Middlesex, retd schoolmasters wife) and children were at Hammersmith (census). Oxford Alumni, vol 2, p. 424: Richard Elwell (1775), son of John, of Westminster, gent, WADHAM COLLEGE, matric 1793, aged 18. From “Iron Elwells” by Charles John Lister Elwell (1919-2008), who worked for MI5 and broke the Portland spy ring in 1961: John Elwell (b. 1739) left the Midlands and became a successful tin smith and brazier in London. His son Richard (b. 1775) was elected a Foundation Scholar of Winchester in 1785. In 1793 he took part in a rebellion at the school and was expelled. He studied at Oxford for only 1 year, possibly due to lack of money. He married Catherine Odell, daughter of Thomas Odell of Odell, Bedfordshire. In 1805 he founded his Academy at Hammersmith. Among the pupils were Henry Venn Elliott (1792), Henry Alford (1810), Gathorne Hardy (Lord Cranbrook) (1814). The pupil’s conditions were said to be similar to those of Dotheboy’s Hall. Richard d. 2nd qtr 1860 at Chiswick Lane. Richard d. 2nd qtr 1860 at Brentford (bmd). Richard (1798-1887), the eldest son of Richard (1775), lived at Dunlop House, Weston super Mare, schoolmaster at his brother Jonathan’s school. William Odell Elwell (1806-95), 4th son, wrote dictionaries. Jonathan Elwell (12jan1811-2apr1898) became a teacher, without studying, 1st at Springfield, Co. Londonderry, then at Chester (where a pupil was the son of John Bird Sumner (b. 1780)). Later Jonathan had a school at Walscot House, Weston, now Grand Atlantic Hotel. When he died he was survived by 7 of his 10 children. References
