Jonathan Elwell (1dec1811 Hammersmith-4feb1898 Weston-super-Mare) was son of Richard Elwell (24mar1775 Hammersmith-13apr1860) and Catherine Odell (1774-1858) (information, D. Elfick). From “Iron Elwells” by Charles John Lister Elwell (1919-2008), who worked for MI5 and broke the Portland spy ring in 1961: Jonathan Elwell (12jan1811-2apr1898) became a teacher, without studying, first at Springfield, Co. Londonderry, then at Chester (where a pupil was the son of John Bird Sumner (b. 1780)). Later Jonathan had a school at Walscot House, Weston-super-Mare, now Grand Atlantic Hotel. When he died he was survived by 7 of his 10 children. From "Iron Elwells", 2nd Edition: Jonathan Elwell lived at Bars House, Chester, and kept a day school at Lower Broughton; in 1846 he moved to Weston-super-Mare, probably partly because of the health of his children but also to take over his younger brother Joseph’s flourishing school, Belvidere in Beach Rd.; Jonathan built a new school called Walliscote House (and later The College) nearby; the building became later the Grand Atlantic Hotel. Isabell Moffat married Jonathan ELWELL (1811-1898) 28apr1832 at St. Pancras, London, England (P. Stubbs, IGI). In 1841 the following Elwells lived at Boughton, Cheshire: Jonathan (1811, outside county, schoolteacher), Isabella (1811 Scotland), Francis (1834 outside cty), Alfred (1835 Scotland/Ireland), Isabella (1837 Cheshire), George (1841 Cheshire) and Moffats, b. Scotland: Elizabeth (1788), John (1820, teacher), Elizabeth (1822, teacher), Robert (1825), Mary (1827) (census).
