Edward married Elizabeth Wasbourne/Washbourne GIBBS 4th qtr 1873 at Bath, Somerset (bmd). Elizabeth Washbourne Gibbs was b. 4th qtr 1845 at Bath (bmd), and d. 26nov1907 at Long Crendon (Times). Rev. Edward Simeon Elwell, Worcester Coll., got a B.D. at Oxford 1878 and DD 1882 (Times).

Edward was accompanied on his trip to NZ by Henry Willmott, whose sister married George Henry Elwell; the trip was probably arranged by the Valpy family ("Iron Elwells"). In 1871 Edward passed a degree at Worcester College, Oxford, was ordained and became curate in Weston s.M.; in 1882 he became D.D. In 1886 he became rector of Edington, Somerset, and in 1895 of Aston-Sandford, nr Thame; in 1900 he moved to nearby Long Crendon (info from “Iron Elwells” by Charles J.L. Elwell). In 1911 Edward Simson Elwell (1843 Bars House, Chester) and Rachel Elizabeth Washbourne Elwell (1876 Jerlia Terr., Burnham, Somerset) were at Thame, Oxfordshire (census).
