This census record raises a number of questions: why is Polly shown as Ann Jones, when she should be Polly Palmer and where did she get real estate -- is it being claimed by Polly, or by Elizabeth? If it is claimed by Polly, does it refer to Warranty Land Polly claimed in her Widow's Pension Application was given for her husband's service in the War of 1812 and sold by her after his death? The ages of the older children are off, suggesting "guessed" reporting. The children, however, are all Polly's, including the youngest, who is the son of her second husband, Richard Palmer. Finally, who is Elizabeth Carpenter and what, if any, is her relationship to Polly? She does not seem to be related to the Sarah Carpenter who later married Polly's son James.

This Census record reflects an accent or speech impediment that Polly apparently had and that shows up in various records that were created based on her oral accounts, and that she could not correct because she was illiterate and could not read what was written down. It is, however, consistent with the 1880 Census, and does include Polly's son Henry who was shown in the 1860 Census. It is also consistent with later testimony from her Widow's Pension Application] regarding her place or residence.

"Old lady Palmer has been very sick for the last ten days, suffering from erysipelas of the face and head."
- ↑ Polly's age and birth place are based on various census records, all of which other than the 1850 census are remarkably consistent. Polly also claimed to be 70 years of age in 14 April 1886, when she applied for a Widow's Pension for her husband's service in the War of 1812.
Polly is listed as a minor heir in her father's probate records.
- ↑ Although Polly was apparently named Mary, she almost never used that name, and nearly all of her records give her name as Polly.
