Biography

Isham Meadows is often said to have been born about 1775 in North Carolina.[2][3] The date is most likely based on the 1820 Census[7] and his early appearance in Anson County, North Carolina. However, the 1800 US Census suggests that he is more likely to have been born about 1774 or slightly earlier.[4] His claiming ownership of land in 1794 suggests that he was born about 1773.[21]. Because his parents were living in Craven County, South Carolina at that time, South Carolina is his most likely place of birth.

Isham did move to Anson County, North Carolina early in his life. On 20 March 1794 Isham he claimed entry on land there,[21] and is listed there in the 1800 Census.[4] This may be where he married his wife Sarah, probably about 1798,

By November 1805, Isham was in Knox County, Kentucky, where he was granted a certificate for 100 acres of land, and where he appeared on the tax list for October 1808, and in the US Census for 1810.[18][5] Isham also served in the War of 1812.

On 1 September 1812 Isham, his brother Pleasant, and Nathan Shelly, husband of Isham's niece Mary Meadows, were all enlisted in the 2nd Regiment (Captain James McNeil's Company), Kentucky Volunteers, and all listed as failed to attend and march. Nathan Shelly's descendants, however, apparently have papers that prove his service, and correspondence from The Kentucky Historical Society, quoting Quisenberry, note that “There appears to be good evidence that there were several regiments of Kentucky militia in the war, the rolls of which have been lost. . . . There is no roll now in existence of the Second Regiment of Kentucky Riflemen, which would have contained about 500 men.” The correspondence also notes that the men in Captain McNeil's Company listed as "failed to attend" probably marched with Lieut. Col. William Jennings 5th Company, with Captain David McNeils.[19]

On 20 November 1813 Isham had 200 acres of land surveyed on the Jellico watershed as part of an application for a land grant.[9]] He received the grant on 1 September 1817,[17] and sold the land on 18 September 1820.[1]

Before receiving the final patent for his Knox County, Kentucky land, Isham had moved to Indiana, where he applied for a US Land Grant for 228 and 99/100s acres in Orange County on 3 September 1816.[20] Apparently unsatisfied with that land, he did not complete the application and applied, instead, for another 160 acres of land in Lawrence County on 28 November 1816,[11]

Isham remained in Lawrence County, Indiana through 1822, appearing on the 1820 US Census, and on road work crews for 1821 and 1822.[7][8] (Road work crews were comprised of all able bodied males living along a designated length of road who spent about a week each spring maintaining the road.)

By March of 1823 Isham was on the move again, selling his land in Lawrence County and applying for a US Land Grant in Montgomery County, Indiana. In 1824 and 1827 he made two more applications for US Land Grants in Montgomery County, bringing his total land ownship to 240 acres.[12][13][14] At least some of this land was no doubt meant for his children, as on 19 January 1826 he sold 75 acres to his married daughter Keziah and his son Thomas.[15]

Isham died, most likely in Montgomery County, before 6 March 1828. On that date his son Isom sold land in Montgomery County that he had inherited from his father.[15] Isham's estate was entered into Probate in May 1829 and named his widow Sally, his children Isom Meadows and Keziah Woods (living out of state), his children Eda Marlow, Thomas Meadows, Riley Meadows, and John Meadows, and his minor children Isaiah, Reuben, Jackson, Polly and George Meadows as his heirs.[16]
