Mary Ann Piggot was born around 1794 at Warwick, daughter of Martha Piggot, formerly Jeffs, and her husband John Rowland Piggot. Mary’s father died in 1797, when Mary was only two or three years old. Mary was not baptised until 1804, when she was nine years old.
On 21st February 1819 Mary married William Mitchell at St Mary’s Church in Warwick. One of the witnesses to the marriage was Mary’s brother-in-law, William Atwood, who was married to Mary’s older sister Elizabeth.
Mary and William went on to have seven children together between 1821 and 1839, all born in Warwick. William was described as a brick maker on some of their children’s baptism records and a labourer on others. Their eldest child died in 1826 when he was only four or five years old, whilst staying with Mary’s sister Elizabeth, who had moved to Birmingham. Mary and William’s second child died when she was only four years old in 1828. Mary and William’s other five children all lived to adulthood.
The addresses given for the family suggest they moved around within Warwick frequently, being listed at Friar’s Lane in 1821, Smith Street in 1824, St John’s Place in 1827, Cotton End in 1828 and 1829, Smith Street again in 1832, Market Street in 1834 and Bowling Green Street in 1839.
Mary’s mother died in 1831.
The 1841 census finds Mary, William and some of their children living at Satchell Court on Bowling Green Street in Warwick. By 1851 they had moved to Pigwell Lane, and William was working as a maltster. The 1861 census still described William as a maltster, and lists the family on Saltisford.
In 1862, Mary’s daughter Emma was admitted to the Warwick County Asylum. She spent six months there until her death in January 1863, aged about 31.
Mary died in 1869, aged about 74. She was buried at St Mary’s Church in Warwick on 6th April 1869. William survived her by five years.

1804 / No. 46 / May 23 / Mary Ann Dau[ghte]r of John Rowland & Martha Piggot, 9 years [1794/5]
This baptism has been linked to the Mary Piggot who married William Mitchell on the basis that one of the witnesses to their marriage was a William Atwood. He had married Elizabeth Piggot at the same church in 1811, and the Mary baptised in 1804 had an older sister called Elizabeth. In 1816 Elizabeth and William Atwood also gave one of their children the distinctive middle name of Rowland, which was Mary and Elizabeth’s father’s middle name as recorded on this 1804 baptism.

d. Mary MITCHELL, June Quarter 1869, Warwick Registration District, Volume 6d, page 285, aged 78 [1790/1]
Although the age quoted is slightly too old, this is the only death of a Mary Mitchell in the Warwick district between the 1861 and 1871 censuses, when William was described as a widower. The corresponding burial also gives her abode as Saltisford, which was the street on which she had been living in the 1861 census.
