On March 4, 1836 Andrew Jackson and Jefferson Niles were the first settlers. Harvey P. Watters took a claim not long after. Daniel Wooten announced the birth of his daughter, Margaret, in the fall of 1837. On March 10, 1830 A.J. Niles and Nancy A. Farwell united in marriage. The first school, held in a log structure, was held in 1845 by Laura Colburn on her father's farm.

Margaret Wootan Hathaway

Mrs. Margaret Hathaway, eighty-six years old, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. N. C. Hubbard, at Lone Tree, MO at eight o'clock Sunday morning of paralysis. She is survived by her children; Robert of the state of Wash.; Dan of Nampa, Idaho; G. H. Hathaway of Montevallo; Mrs. W. Nye of Mt. Dory, N. Mex.; Mrs. Kohler of Harrisonville and Mrs. N. C. Hubbard of Lone Tree. Her husband, Zack Hathaway, died at Montevallo fourteen years ago. Mrs. Guy Hutchens. who died several years ago was a daughter of Mrs. Hathaway. Margaret Wootan was born at Freeport, Ill. She was married there to Mr. Hathaway seventy years ago. She came with her husband to Vernon County in 1867 and settled near Montevallo and went to Lone Tree two years ago to live with her daughter. Mrs. Hathaway was a member of the Methodist church at Montevallo and a sincere Christian woman. She leaves a host of friends to mourn her death. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Teays of Sheldon at Montevallo at one o'clock Monday afternoon and burial was at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Kohler accompanied the body to Nevada and attended the funeral.
