From Robert Tevis (Tivis), His Parents, His Siblings, and His Progeny by Nancy Pearrer Lesure, Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin

Neither birth nor baptismal records have been found for any of the daughters of Robert Sr. and Margaret Tevis. There are likewise no land depositions or obituaries that allow us to estimate the dates of their births, and only a few clues to the times of their deaths. They are defined for us largely by the men they married and the children they bore. We would like to know more.

One interesting vignette comes from a Porter family tradition: twelve Tevis daughters and their husbands gathered at the family home on the Patapsco River for a Christmas dinner party. The husbands' surnames are given: Armstrong, two Bennetts, Brown, James Crow, Hammond, Lindsay, Mercer, Adam Porter, two Wellses, and Francis Wells. The names apparently came from a manuscript by a descendant in Kentucky, but there are problems of timing with the list: Francis Wells and probably the two Tevis daughters who married his brothers died before the youngest daughter married James Crow. So far, researchers have found Armstrong and Hammond marriages only in the fourth generation. Nevertheless, the list is a useful guide.

The probable early deaths of Susannah and Sarah [Wells] also complicate interpretation of Robert Tevis Sr.'s 1796 will, for he includes them as though they were alive in the list of daughters to receive a shilling each. Perhaps he was old and confused, or perhaps he wanted to obviate any claims against his estate by their heirs. A further complication is his complete omission of Delilah, wife of Adam Porter, although she appears to have been alive and well and living in Virginia at the time. Again, we can only speculate that she was too far away to come back and claim any part of his estate, or that Delilah was another name for one of the daughters we know nothing about.

From A Record of Tevis Births by Kathleen Field, Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin

Since Nancy Pearre Lesure submitted her latest article concerning Robert Tevis and his family to the Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin, I have received a photocopy of the following pertinent Bible records. These Bible records were sent to me by Donna Younkin Logan. Mrs. Logan does not own the originals; they are in private hands.

The Bible records are on two pages and appear to have been torn or have fallen from an old Bible. The second page is a very poor photocopy. [The information, all regarding birth dates of the children, has been entered in this database.]

The Grandchildren of Margaret and Robert Tevis, Sr. by Mary M. Bell, Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin, V34 P 293

The four sons were named in [Robert Sr.'s] the will in their correct birth order, and this was probably true for the 12 daughters as well. Rachel was identified as the youngest daughter, and because of the earliest marrige by several years, Anne is presumed to be the oldest. Marriage dates would seem to corroborate that the list of daughters was given by the order of birth. Delilah's position in the birth order was chosen by the presumed 1742 birth date of her husband and the 1767 birth of their first child... The 17 children of Robert and Margaret in the estimated order of birth were Peter, Anne, Susannah, Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Keturah, Mary, Hammutal, Naomi, Delilah, Sarah, Ruth, Robert Jr., Honor, Benjamin, Cassandra, and Rachel. Although two listings of the married names of the 12 daughters included Armstrong and Hammond, this is believed to be an error. Elizabeth and Susannah Wells, daughters of Anne, married George Hammond and James Armstrong.

The Wells daughters were born in 1758 and 1761 and were about the same ages as their aunts who were the youngest Tevis daughters.
