Family's Oral History
Lottie's husband, Julian, lived with their son, Harley, most of his life. Harley's children recall that the topic of Julian's marriage was off limits.
Apparently Lottie's father wanted her to marry young. She was just 15 when she married Julian Haines in August of 1899. She and Julian had three children, two sons and one daughter.
Lottie suffered from severe headaches for which she took laudanum. Harley recalled trips to the local store when his mother purchased this potent drug.
Lottie is listed with her husband and children in the 1910 census. Sometime after that she left, perhaps to run off with another man. She took her daughter, Helen, with her. Lottie's parents took in her two boys, Harley and Ray. Julian continued to work on the railroad.
Lottie died in a hospital in 1912.
After her death Julian stopped working for the railroad and found work at a children's home. Harley didn't want to live there and was bound out to a cruel family (O'Bannon) in Newark. Ray probably lived in the home with his father. Helen was raised by Alfred Gates and his wife, a local couple who raised Helen as their daughter but did not adopt her (Julian would not sign the papers to allow Helen to be adopted).
We believe that the photo of Lottie and Julian is their wedding photo.
