Julian worked as a railroad "gandy dancer" and also at the Shelby Steel Tube Co. in Shelby, Ohio.

He never remarried after his much-younger and estranged wife, Lottie May (Troup), died in 1912. He lived with his eldest son, Harley, and Harley's wife, Martha, in Marion, Ohio, probably beginning in the 1920s (he is living with Harley and Martha during the 1930 U.S. Census and lived with them until his death). Julian died in Marion in 1957, and is buried in the Marion Cemetery.

His grandchildren remember that Julian spent hours tending the family's vegetable gardens. His contribution in keeping Harley and Martha's large family fed was especially valuable during the hard days of the Great Depression.

Julian did not speak of his family or his deceased wife and little is known of his ancestry. It is believed that he did possess a family Bible which had important information on the family ancestry but that this Bible was loaned out and not returned.

We are attempting to find information on Julian's father, James T. Haines who, according to U.S. Census records, was born in 1822 in New Jersey and died in Norwalk, Ohio, in 1917.
