Family Notes
According to her nieces, Myrtle Helen went by the name of Helen. Her mother, Lottie, left the family after the 1910 census was taken. Helen was then raised by Family: Alfred Gates and Clara Stevens (1). She used their surname of "Gates" and is listed as Alfred and Clara's daughter in the 1920 census. However Helen's biological father, Julian Haines, was unwilling to sign the appropriate paperwork to allow her to be legally adopted by the Gates. rc
