It was granted to him and his heirs male by King George III on 15 Aug. His (maternal) grandfather's baronetcy became extinct in 1709 when he died without surviving male issue. |

Dated 19 July 1779. “I Sir Joseph Copley Baronet heretofore Joseph Moyle and afterwards Joseph Copley of Southampton Esquire having changed my name to Copley on my becoming intitled to and taking certain real Estates at and near Sprotborough in Yorkshire and elsewhere formerly belonging to my Grand Father Sir Godfrey Copley and afterwards to Lionel Copley Esquire both deceased.” He bequeathed to his sons “Lionel the elder son and Joseph the younger”, daughters Maria, Catherine (wife of John James Hamilton), Juliana, and Ann, and wife Dame Mary Copley. Wits. Ralph Woodford (of New Norfolk St.), James Coulthard, and Edw. Morgan (of Lincoln's Inn). Probate London, 27 April 1781.
