Joseph Andrew Doyle was born on 29th March 1890 in the city of Dublin, the son of a policeman named Thomas Doyle and his wife Bridget Cleary. Joseph was the eldest of the couple's four children, although their third child died young. In 1898, when Joseph was seven years old, his mother Bridget died, either giving birth to his brother John Maurice or shortly after. After his mother's death, Joseph and his surviving brothers left Dublin went to live with their late mother's brother and sister, Thomas and Eliza Cleary (neither of whom had married), at Monasterevin in County Kildare. Their father later moved out of Dublin to join them, probably after his retirement from the police.

As an adult, Joseph moved to England. He is known to have married and had children. He died in Portsmouth in 1955, aged 65.
