Thomas Doyle was born in about 1844 in County Kilkenny in Ireland. In 1889 he married Bridget Cleary from Monasterevin in County Kildare, but they married in London rather than in Ireland. However, they returned to Ireland shortly after their marriage, settling at 8 Lombard Street West in the southern suburbs of Dublin, where they had four sons in the 1890s, although the third died as a baby.

Bridget died shortly after giving birth to their fourth son. Thomas then sent the baby and the other two surviving boys to live with his late wife's brother and sister, Thomas and Eliza Cleary at Monasterevin. Thomas worked as a policeman, and after his retirement moved to live with his children and in-laws in Monasterevin, appearing with them in the 1911 census.

Thomas died at Monasterevin on 4th August 1919. His youngest son was present at the death.
