John Maurice Doyle (who was known by his middle name) was born on 11th January 1898 in the city of Dublin, son of a policeman named Thomas Doyle and his wife Bridget Cleary. Maurice's mother died shortly after giving birth to him. Maurice and his brothers Joseph and Jimmy went to live with their late mother's unmarried brother and sister, Thomas and Eliza Cleary, who lived at Monasterevin in County Kildare. Their father Thomas moved out of Dublin to join them after he retired from the police.
Maurice later moved to England, settling in the north-western suburbs of London. He married and had children. He died in 1969, aged 71.
