Assuming it was due to the fact he was part of Admiral Vernon's disastrous expedition (see wikipedia:Edward Vernon#Cartagena de Indias) as described in the text, that would seem to imply he was alive for at least part of 1741.]

"John Houghton of Lancaster, Mass., and Some of His Descendants". It is certainly not unreasonable given his marriage date. His father's distribution calls him the "fourth son".
