John MacKie Whyte, son of David Whyte and Ann Rumgay, was born on 12 May 1882 in Fergus Place, Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. He appeared on the census of 1891 in the household of his parents at 98 Alexandra Street, Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. In 1901, John was a draper's assistant in Kirkcaldy. He immigrated in 1905 to in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John was a shoe salesman between 1909 and 1910. He lived at 3739 Darien Street, Philadelphia.
John MacKie Whyte married Jane Muirhead Forrest, daughter of Alexander Russel Forrest and Margaret Brown, on 28 September 1909 in Philadelphia, by J. C. McFeeters. John and Jean appeared on the census of 1910 at at 3739 Darien Street. John filed a declaration of intent to become a U.S. citizen on 5 April 1917. He filed his petition for naturalization on 19 November 1920. John was a sales manager in a publishing house in 1920. John and Jean appeared on the census of 1920 at at 5719 Leonard Street, Philadelphia, with their children Marguerite, William and Gwendolyn. John was an advertising salesman in 1930. John and Jean appeared on the census of 1930 on William Street, Cornwells Heights, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with their children Marguerite, William, Gwendolyn and Robert.
In 1942, John lived at at D. I. Cottage Street, Cornwells Heights, Bucks County. He worked for Progessive Sales Company at at 1524 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Between 1952 and 1967, John lived at at 1037 Cornwells Avenue, Cornwells Heights. John's wife, Jean Whyte, died on 20 October 1952 at, Frankford Hospital, Philadelphia. He may have married Edith F. (--?--), but the family is unsure if the couple were legally married. On John's death certificate, Edith signed as Edith F. Whyte. John MacKie Whyte died on 22 March 1967 at home at age 84 of a heart attack caused by coronary artery disease. He was buried on 28 March 1967 at Forest Hills Cemetery, Somerton, Philadelphia County.
