The Will of John Rolfe of Newbury

"His will, then of Newbury, after the 1st formal item, gives: 2d, House and land in Salis. to his dau. Hester Sanders, wife of John Sanders, and her chil. 3d, To Sarah Cottell, wife of Wm. Cottell, and her two chil., Sarah C. and Ann C., to be improved by Wm. Cottl for their benefit, 'in addition to what I have given her before.' 4th, To my grand chil. Isaac Ring and Joseph Ring, and to Elizabeth Shropshere and Esther Ring. 5th, To Thomas Whittier's five [or four?] children. 6th, To chh. at Nb. 7th, To 'Richard Whittyer, my sister's son, and her son John Whittier.' 8th, To John Roffe, my brother's son, and his two daus., 'Marie and Rebeca Roffe.' 9th, To Benj. Roff's son John Roffe and his son Benj. Roffe. 10th, To Ann Gardner, wife of Richard Gardner. 11th to 13th, Richard Dole's six children, [Mari Kinrick?], etc. 'Kindsman Richard Dole' exec."[2]

    John(1) Rolfe of Salisbury and Newbury, "husbandman." bro of Henry(1), b. ab. 1588, came in the "Confidence," 1638, from "Melchitt Parke," Wilts, via Southampton, with wife Ann, dau. Hester and servant Thomas(1) Whittier [or Whittle]; fre. Sep., 1639. He recd. land in S. in the "first division," 1639, '40, and '54; commoner and taxed 1650 and '52; signed S. petition of 1658, etc. … He died Feb. 8, 1663-4[Nb]; will Feb. 4, March 29, 1663-4.
