Origins

Edmund (1611) p. 31 History of Sudbury 974.44/s1 H2h makes a deposition in 1666 that he is about 55 years old. Search of both Shaftesbury parish registers 1559-1650 and Donhead, St. Andrew Bishop's Transcripts 1622-1638 (only existing BT's for period) and other surrounding parishes by Mr. C.M.M. Barrow do not reveal christening of Edmund. He is shown on a sheet in the archives with a (2) wife Sarah. The Sarah, wife of Edmund, died 6 Nov 1691 (Sudbury Vital Records p. 306) following the birth of a child, Ebenezar, on 25 Oct 1691 (SVR p. 52). This Sarah is the (2) wife of Edmund (1661) who was the son of John (1634 or 1635) who was the son of Edmund (1611).

Life in New England

From Puritan village: the formation of a New England town, by Sumner Chilton Powell: The General Court appointed Edmund Goodenow to be first constable of Sudbury.

Legacy

No will has been found on this Edmund (1611) either in Middlesex County or in England. However, a grandson, John Kettle is referred to in Charlestown Genealogies and Estates p. 575 (GS974.44/c1 D2w) as one of two grandsons of Edmund Goodnow names in his will in 1680. A sheet in the archives shows two additional children, Mary born 25 Aug 1640 and Edmund. However:

  • Extensive research show Mary to be the daughter of Thomas, brother of Edmund (1611) (see Sudbury Vital Records p. 54).
  • No birth, death, or marriage record has been found for Edmund, son of Edmund. As only an approximate birth date has been given, we believe he had no son named Edmund and that the Edmund shown is actually a grandson, son of John and Mary Axtell Goodenough. See sheet on John Goodenough for further explanations. In addition, Further research shows that in Edmund's (1611) land transactions of 19 Mar 1687 (GSF554003 p. 95 Bk 10 Middlesex Co. Deeds) he states, "my well-beloved and only son John." Therefore, any Edmund alive after 1687 could not have been the son of Edmund who died in 1688.
