John Mitchell was born in 1860 at Warwick, son of a laundress named Mary Ann (known as Ann) Mitchell, formerly King, and her husband, Samuel Mitchell, a maltster in a brewery. John appears in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses living at home with his parents and siblings on Saltisford, the main street leading out of Warwick to the north-west. John's father died in 1883.

In 1885, aged 24, John married Lucy Warden at Coventry, ten miles north of Warwick. She was a few months older than him and from Coventry. John and Lucy stayed in Coventry after their marriage, with John working as a gas engine driver in cycle manufacturing, whilst Lucy was a silk weaver and winder. They did not have any children. Back in Warwick, John's mother died in 1896.

Lucy died in 1919, aged 59. They had been married for 34 years. John outlived her by over fifteen years. He died in 1935, aged 75.

   TRAGEDY FOLLOWS JUBILEE DINNER
   COVENTRY PENSIONER'S FATAL COLLAPSE
   The circumstances of the fatal collapse of a 77-years-old pensioner, John Mitchell, of 36, Whitefriars Street, Coventry, which took place on Thursday afternoon last week, when he was returning home from the Old People's Jubilee dinner in the Drill Hall, was inquired into by the Coventry Coroner (Mr. C.W. Iliffe) at an inquest held last Saturday.
   Alfred Thomas Mitchell, a nephew, said his uncle, who was retired, had previously been treated at the Gulson Road Hospital for heart trouble.
   Arthur William Ashby, 67, Springfield Road, stated that he saw the old man collapse at 2.50 p.m. in St. Patrick's Road. The Jubilee plate which had been presented to the man at the Drill Hall was smashed in the fall. Witness rendered first-aid, and the ambulance was summoned.
   Dr. H.R. Duval, of Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital, said the man was dead when he saw him in hospital. Death was due to excessive strain acting on chronic myocarditis. The strain would be caused by the walking and the meal.
   A verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned.
