Lucy Warden was born on 14th February 1860 at Coventry in Warwickshire, daughter of Caroline Warden, formerly Burnell, and her husband James Warden. Both Caroline and James worked as weavers. They had married less than three months before Lucy's birth. The 1861 census finds baby Lucy living with her parents at 20 White Friars Lane in Coventry. Lucy had a younger brother, James, born in 1865.

In 1867, when Lucy was just seven years old, her mother Caroline died, aged 30. The 1871 census finds Lucy and her brother James living with their maternal grandmother, Mary Burnell, at 9 Bishopgate Green.

In 1877, when Lucy was 17, her father married again, with a Caroline Richardson becoming Lucy's stepmother. The 1881 census finds Lucy living with her father, stepmother, brother, and a younger half-sister named Clara at 29 Adelaide Street in Coventry. By this time Lucy was also working as a silk weaver.

On 28th February 1885, a couple of weeks after her 25th birthday, Lucy married John Mitchell. John was from Warwick, ten miles south of Coventry. He worked as a gas engine driver in Coventry's cycle manufacturing industry. John and Lucy stayed in Coventry after their marriage, appearing in the 1891 census in a two roomed home in a court off Cox Street. By 1901 they were living at 39 St Peter Street, in a five roomed house. In the 1911 census they were living at 10 Colchester Street in a four roomed house. They also reported to the 1911 census that they had not had any children.

Lucy died in 1919, aged 59. John survived her by over fifteen years.
