According to family stories he was born in England in 1833. Original ly he was supposed to go to South Africa but went to New Orleans instead w ith his wife. They went up the Mississippi to St. Louis where his wife di ed in an epidemic. He then married Margaret Warren, who may be part India n. They moved to Iowa where he was a blacksmith? and farmer?

Researcher Sue Hebbeler located two "John Maynard" index cards for New Orl eans immigrants, but they are very hard to read. The first states that Ma ynard, JNO? from England, a gardener?, embarked at Liverpool and arriv ed in New Orleans on Dec 12, 18?4 on the S/S John Powell. The second stat es that Maynard, John, from England, a farmer, embarked at Liverpool and a rrived in New Orleans on April 2, 1855 on the S/S/ Sandusky. Based on t he 1920 census, he immigrated in 1855, so the latter entry matches. The s hip passenger records show that John arrived with his wife, but her fir st name is not given.

Although there are no family stories stating that he was a Civil War veter an, it is possible. Civil War muster rolls show a John W. Maynard, age 29, enlisted in an Io wa regiment. Ancestry.com Military Service Data Base shows John W. Maynard, claimed res idence in Howard County, Iowa, enlisted 9 Aug 1862, Rk Pvt, enlisted at a ge 29, promoted to full corporal on 19 Aug 1964, served Iowa, transferr ed F Co 34th Inf Reg IA, mustered out on 15 Aug 1865. Source: Roster a nd Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of Rebellion. F Co. 34th Inf Reg IA was organized 15 Oct 1862, mustered out 15 Aug 186 5. Battles fought: Fort Morgan, AL; Arkansas Post, Ark, 11 Jan 1863; Vic ksburg, Miss, 21 June 1863, 1 Jul, 4 Jul; Atchafalaya, LA 29 Sept 1863; M organza, LA 29 Sept 1863; Sterling Plantation, LA 29, Sep 1863; Morganz a, LA 29 Oct 1863; Fort Gaines, AL 6 Aug 1864; Ft. Blakely, AL 6 & 9 A pr 1865. The 1910 census does not list him as a Civil War vet but that census tak er did not seem to check that column for others who would have been of app ropriate age. However the website of freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~coov erfamily/38_i.html states as follows: "Maynard, John W., Age 29, resid ence Howard County, nativity New York, enlisted Aug. 9, 1862; promoted Sev enth Corporal Aug. 19, 1864; transferred to Company F, Thirty-fourth and T hirty-eighth Consolidated." Thus it appears that this soldier may n ot be our ancestor. His age is correct but his birthplace is wrong.

Census data: So far I have been unable to located him in the 1860 census. They were ma rried at the end of 1859. If they were traveling up river to Iowa at t he time of the 1860 census, they may have been missed.
