Facts and Events
Notes from Family Album by Bertha Qualls: Frank Maynard was raised in Iowa where as a young man he raised and train ed hunting dogs. He also played baseball on his town team. It was the cu stom in the late 1800's for each town and hamlet to have a baseball team c omposed of all the young men. Each Sunday there was a game with a neighbo ring town. These leagues were small, limited by how far one could trav el by horse and buggy, play a game and return home in 1 day. He mov ed to South Dakota where he and his brother {possibly George] operated a g rain elevator and general store. He was also the post master. Not mu ch is known about his background except the name of his parents and his el even brothers and sisters. He moved to Washington about 1900. In Central ia, WA, he met and married Ethel Baxter. They lived for many years in Gal vin (formerly Lincoln Creek), Washington. Galvin was a thriving mill to wn at that time, supporting several stores and saloons, and a fair size po pulation. Frank worked in the large lumber mill owned by the Galvin Broth ers. He held various jobs during this part of his life, all for the sa me company (edger-man, tally man, and night watchman). His children delig hted in his job as night watchman, for he took them along on his early eve ning rounds, telling them stories which always ended "to be continued tomo rrow night." He lost parts of both hands in separate accidents at the mil l. After his accidents he had a small dairy (8 cows) and had a milk rout e. That is, he delivered fresh milk daily to his regular customers. In 1 927 he suffered a stroke and only partially recovered. He sold his acrea ge and moved to Centralia. He and his wife raised flower bulbs for commer cial sale and started a greenhouse. As a young man he liked to wear expen sive clothes which he wore with considerable style. His love outside h is family was cards. He amazed everyone with his dexterity with card s, as parts of both hands were missing (the thumb and first two fingers we re gone from his right hand and he was missing the smaller two finge rs on his left hand). He delighted in slight of hand tricks with cards. 1880 US Census, Iowa, Marshall County, Washington Twp, E.D. 299, p. 19 sho ws Frank Maynard, white male age 7, son of John Maynard, born in Iowa. 1900 US Census, South Dakota, Codington County, Ra*sville Township, Vo l. 4, E.D. 103, Sheet 6, Line 68, shows Frank Maynard, white male, born Ju ne 1875 in Iowa, age 25, enumerated with John Grinr, relationship servant. 1910 US Census, Washington State, Lewis County, E.D. 148, page 9A, Line 2 8, shows Franch Maynard, age 30, born in Iowa, living in Greenwood Townsh ip with his wife Ethel and two children, Edith and Everett. 1920 US Census, Washington State, Lewis County, Vol. 28.
