Married John Maynard after his first wife died. She may have been an Ind ian (Native American). A family picture taken in 1915 shows her to have d ark complexion and high cheek bones. She may have been born in Shawneetow n, Illinois, which was a Shawnee Indian town at one time.

Obituary from June 7, 1923 State Center Newspaper (note: article probab ly taken from Marshalltown newspaper and reprinted] "Mrs. Margaret Maynard, wife of John Maynard,died at her home at 11:15 Wed nesday evening, May 31. She had been ill for over one year with dropsy a nd heart disease and bedfast for several weeks. "Margaret Warren was born in Shawneetown, Illinois March 17, 1840. Her pa rents died when she was small and at age 10 went to live with an aunt in E vansville, In. and lived there until after her marriage December 31, 185 9. Several years later moved to Marshall county Illinois and then to Mars hall county Iowa in 1869 to a farm east of State Center until 21 years a go when they moved to town. "Nine children survive, Thomas W. Wakeeny, KS; George R. Osceola SD, Fra nk S. Centralia, WA, Albert M. Boone, James G. Des Moines, Mrs. F. E. Torr ence, Charles E and Fred L. Maynard, this city and John W. State Center."

1880 US Census, Iowa, Marshal County, Washington Twp, E.D. 299, p. 19, sta tes that Margaret was a white female, age 40, wife of John Maynard, occcup ation keeping house, born in Illinois, parents both born in England.

1920 US Census, Iowa, Marshall County, State Center, Vol. 53, E.D. 171, Sh eet 16, line 95, shows Margaret, wife of John Maynard, white female age 7 9, could read and write, parents were both born in Illinois (Note that th is birth information conflicts with the 1880 census).
