John Marshall was baptised on 23rd February 1719 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of a couple named Joseph (also known as Josiah or Josias) and Sarah Marshall, who lived at East Hyde, a hamlet on the southern edge of the parish. John appears to have been baptised twice - being baptised again with two younger siblings on 2nd April 1725 with the records clearly saying that he was then six years old. The reasons for this are not clear.

John's father was buried on 30th October 1745 at Luton. John was married just nine days later to Elizabeth Saunders. They went on to have six children baptised at Luton between 1747 and 1760. Most of the children's baptisms specify that the family lived in the hamlet of Chiltern Green, which is on the hill overlooking East Hyde.

No burial has yet been found for either John or Elizabeth. The last confirmed sighting of either of them is the baptism of their youngest son James in 1760.

East Hyde: John Marshall son of Simon & Sarah Bap[tised] Feb[ruary] 22

There is clearly a discrepancy between the Parish Register and the Bishop's Transcript as to whether the father's name was Joseph or Simon.

This baptism has been linked to the John who married Elizabeth Saunders in 1745 on the basis that John and Elizabeth Saunders gave one of their sons the unusual name Josias, which was one of the variants of John's father's name. The baptism also specifies that the family lived at East Hyde, the neighbouring hamlet to Chiltern Green where the adult John settled (and on some definitions Chiltern Green was deemed to be part of the hamlet of East Hyde).

As with John's first baptism, there is a discrepancy on his father's name. The rough copy version of the Parish Register and the Bishop's Transcript both give his father's name as Josiah, but the fair copy of the Parish Register gives his name as Joseph.
