Josias Marshall was baptised on 6th May 1750 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Saunders, and her husband John Marshall. The family lived at the hamlet of Chiltern Green in the rural area to the south-east of the town. Josias appears to have been named after his paternal grandfather.

Josias has yet to be traced after his baptism. One possibility is that he was the Joseph Marshall who married Mary Stringall in the neighbouring parish of Harpenden in 1769.
