John and Ann settled on the 40 acres of land given to him by his father . He added to that 40 acres, which were located on the Warm Springs and H arrisonburg Turnpike, near Stribling's Spring, until he had about 200 a cres. He also entered 400 acres in Monroe Co., VA, called "Two Corn Rig hts." He was a farmer and a cooper. John served in Captain Trimble's Company in the Revolutionary War, as d id his son, John. (see 'Virginians in the Revolution," at p. 384) John' s brothers, and their father, also served in the American Revolution. children: (all born in Augusta Co., VA) James - b. 25 Jan 1767 Charles - b. Jan 1769 John Jr. - b. 1773 William - b. 17 Jun 1775 Margaret - 1778 Kentucky tax rolls for 1795 ("First Census") show a William Hogshead in M ercer Co. and a James Hogshead in Woodford Co. Also William Hoggsett in F ranklin Co. 10 Aug 1801 in the 1800 Census, who was perhaps John's son, W illiam. His nephews, James and William (sons of William Alexander), wer e among the several Hogsett and Hogshead families came to Kentucky from V irginia. Did they travel together? 1 2 Birth: 4 AUG 1744 in Augusta Co., Virginia Death: 5 AUG 1781 in Augusta Co., Virginia Note: John died from being overheated in a fight with the Indians. The Indian s proved too strong for the Whites and they retreated. He is buried in t he Gilkeson/Hogshead Cemetery in Augusta Co., VA. Christening: 9 SEP 1744 Augusta Co., Virginia Note: This date was found in the records of Rev. John Craig, from 1 Oct 1740 t o 1 Oct 1749. From Big Lick in what is now Roanoke Co. to Winchester, F rederick Co., Rev. Craig baptized near 900 people in that time. Only tw o of them were Hogsheads. From Chalkley's Augusta County, VA Court Judgements: James Hogshead, son of John Hogshead and grandson of James Hogshead, is the only heir of William Hogshead, to whom was granted fifty acres in 1756.
