Personal History

John James Hamilton,[3][8] only son of the Hon. John Hamilton, Capt. R.N.,[8] was born July 1756,[1] in London,[8] and baptized at St George, Hanover Square.[1]

John entered Harrow School.[8]

On 30 July 1773,[8] John matriculated as fellow-commoner (the first of three ranks) from Pembroke College, Cambridge, and he earned the Master of Arts in 1776.

Upon the death of his uncle, James Hamilton, in 1789, John succeeded as Earl of Abercorn (9th, created 1606), Lord Paisley (9th, 1587), Lord Abercorn (9th, 1603), and Lord Paisley, Hamilton, Mountcastell, and Kilpatrick (9th, 1606), in Scotland; Viscount Strabane (4th, 1701), Lord Hamilton, Baron of Strabane (8th, 1617), and Baron of Mountcastle, co. Tyrone (4th, 1701), in Ireland; and under a special remainder as Viscount Hamilton (2nd, 1786), in Great Britain.

On 17 March 1790,[4] John was appointed to be Governor of the counties of Donegal and Tyrone, in Ireland.

On 1 October 1790,[3][5] King George III granted to John and the heirs-male of his body the dignities of a Marquess in the peerage of Great Britain, and on 15 October,[1] James was created Marquess of Abercorn.

On 1 February 1794,[1] John was appointed to the Privy Council of Ireland.

On 17 January 1805,[6] John was knighted before being elected and invested a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter (KG) by King George III; he was installed at Windsor on 23 April (St. George's Day).

First Marriage and Family

On 19 June 1779, in the Diocese of London, John James Hamilton Esq. of the parish of St. George, Hanover Square, Middlesex, appeared to make oath that he was a bachelor aged 21 years and up and intended to marry Catherine Copley of the parish of St. Marylebone, Middlesex, a spinster and minor aged 19 years. Her father Sir Joseph Copley Bt. also appeared to make oath and give his consent. Both men signed a bond in the amount of £200. On the next day, John and Catherine were married by licence in the parish of St. Marylebone by Joseph Turner. It was witnessed by [Earl of] Abercorn (John's uncle) and Jos. Copley (Catherine's father).

On 3 April 1800, in the dwelling house of Lord Sudley on Dover Street, in Mayfair, Middlesex, England, the Most Noble John James Marquis of Abercorn and the Rt. Hon. Lady Anne Jane Hatton, widow, were married by special licence of the Archbishop of Canterbury in a ceremony officiated by H. Howley M.A. in the presence of [Lord] Sudley and Mary Sudley.

Death and Probate

The Marquess of Abercorn died 27 January 1818, at Bentley Priory, Stanmore, Middlesex, England,[1] and was buried 5 February in the parish of Great Stanmore.[2]

Administration of his will dated 18 March 1809,[7] with four codicils annexed, was granted on 9 May 1818.

Because his first son had died in 1814, the Marquess's titles were inherited by his grandson, James.
